How to Prep For Your Newborn Session: Part 1

I absolutely loved this newborn shoot with the Hellerstedt Family in Buckhead, Atl.

Dreamy newborn photos are the best. But the shoot can be tough work even for the new parents, so I decided to make a blog post series with some tips on how to prepare for your session with me and what to expect. This one will be about self-care, lighting, and outfits.

  1. Have some self care (as much as you can at least). There’s nothing like giving birth to a newborn to make you feel off, haha. Take this photoshoot as a chance to ground yourself in familiar things. Take a shower (trust me it’s harder than you think to make this happen), do a meditation, eat a yummy breakfast. Whatever makes you feel a little more grounded. Honestly the best way to make this happen is communicate with your partner that you need them to do the heavy lifting with the baby so you can take this time for yourself. Another really good idea is inviting over an additional family member to come and help.

  2. Wear something that makes you feel pretty. My client here wore a flowy dress that went perfectly with the nursery. Do you have to wear a dress? No. The goal is to wear whatever you feel amazing in. Do you have to match your nursery? No. But try and find some sort of complimentary color to some decor in your house. Many times we take photos in the parent’s bedroom or the living room, etc.

Always, the safest choice is to wear a neutral color.

  3. Timing & Lighting: The first thing I’ll do when I get to your place is turn off all the lights and open the blinds and windows! That natural light is what I’m looking for. So if your place is on the darker side, we will probably spend a good amount of time by the windows.

This is also why it’s important for me to come when it’s the brightest in the nursery or house. You can help by keeping an eye out for the brightest rooms in the house and taking note of what time it is when the sun is streaming through.

Enjoy the photos from the newborn session below and keep an eye out for more tips and newborn sessions coming soon :)
